Central Idea: Our own family experiences and traditions help us to appreciate our ancestry and respect the family experiences and traditions of others.
Discovering our family history.
How our family histories are alike and different from each other
Traditions, events and interests define our family history
Through a variety of lessons involving their families students inquire into their own family history including recipes, countries of origin, significance of their name, family tree, parent interviews, write letters to grandparents, etc. Students also read a large number of excerpts of stories of children immigrating to the United States and their experiences. In addition videos are shown and stories are read about Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Students are also treated to a presentation from Heritage Tours whereby they act out immigrating to America through Ellis Island. We also take a study trip to the Antique Tractor Museum in Vista to see old artifacts, an old schoolhouse, kitchen, farm equipment and do crafts from the past. Throughout the lessons the wonderful diversity of each student is shared and celebrated. The culminating project is student choice of creating a power point presentation or a brochure sharing the knowledge they gained regarding their family history.
